Many parents find it very difficult to encourage their sons and daughters to live in a CILA or other group home. They may feel that they are somehow abandoning their responsibilities as parents, and they worry about the increased freedom their son or daughter may have in a CILA.
What parents may not realize is that helping a son or daughter find a home in a community can be a very powerful gift. By entering a CILA, the son or daughter takes the next step toward independence, managing as much of his or her life as possible. Parents continue to be a part of the individual’s life, attending staffings and visiting regularly. It is not unusual for a CILA resident to continue vacationing with family members.
But perhaps the best part of helping a son or daughter move into a CILA is that the decision can be made slowly and carefully, not in the midst of an emergency, when choices may be limited.
